Many people would not miss this Asam Laksa at Pasar Air Itam while they travel to Penang. As this Asam Laksa stall is situated at a very strategic location, i.e. 5 minutes walk from Kek Lok Si Temple, one of the place of interest in Penang, there is always a crowd, be it local folks or tourists, in front of the stall. Some people claims that they are the best Asam Laksa in Penang.
Shredded fish (normally "ikan kembung" or mackerel) and sliced vegetables like cucumber, onions, red chilis, mint, lettuce and sliced assam ("asam keping" in malay) can be seen from a bowl of asam laksa. However, the essence of a bowl of asam laksa is the fish used to cook the soup. No doubt, here is the place where you can taste it very well.
If you like the sour taste of laksa, I recommend you to remove the shrimp paste or "petis udang" (malay) or "hae ko" (hokkien) topping from the laksa. As the shrimp paste would give some sweet taste to the soup which would cover up the original sour taste of Asam Laksa.
